Paul Schmidtberger was born and raised in Schooley’s Mountain, New Jersey. He graduated from Yale College, then worked in Japan as a consultant to the Ministry of Education. After returning to the United States, Schmidtberger attended Stanford Law School, graduating in 1991. Following a clerkship in Federal Court, Schmidtberger entered private practice, specializing in international arbitration. After six years in San Francisco, his firm transferred him to their Paris, France office. In 2002, Paul left the practice of law and has been writing ever since.

Today Schmidtberger lives on Paris's historic Place des Vosges. He is an adjunct professor of American law at the University of Paris-Descartes, and proudly lends a hand several afternoons a week at the Red Wheelbarrow, an independent bookshop.
